The official guide is great. In particular, the console commands under Optimizing Perception are essential.
You can try the in-game server browser, but unfortunately there aren’t really any with a low ping from Southeast Asia (last time I checked).
To connect to the weekly FFA server, type ` to bring up the console then type connect ffa.seafps.net.

To connect to a server:
/connect ffa.seafps.netYou don’t need a copy of Quake to play multiplayer (since nQuake includes
GPL-licensed maps), but you can purchase it from either
Steam or
GOG. If you do, copy the
pak1.pak file from the id1 directory of the official version to id1 in your nQuake installation.
